The University of New Mexico College of University Libraries & Learning Sciences (CULLS) has an opening for a Research and Data Services Librarian. This position is a full-time, 12-month, tenure track position with a minimum hiring salary of $76,267 and generous benefits. This position has a starting rank of Assistant Professor, with salary negotiable based on experience and qualifications. This position reports to the Director of Learning, Research, and Engagement. As a member of the highly collaborative Learning, Research, and Engagement team, the Research and Data Services (RDS) Librarian will increase the impact of UNM research through the development and implementation of services supporting FAIR data sharing, data literacy, and ethical data practices. The RDS Librarian will collaborate with campus stakeholders including the Office of the Vice President for Research, the Center for Advanced Research Computing, and the UNM Health Sciences Library and Informatics Center. The RDS Librarian will promote leading practices in data management and open science through the development of sustainable educational and consultation programs, instruction, and data curation and preservation. This position also provides critical support for researchers in developing data management plans, organizing datasets, and facilitating compliance with funding mandates.  

The successful candidate will engage the broader campus community with empathy, curiosity, and a strong service orientation. Through frequent collaboration with colleagues in the College and across campus, the RDS Librarian will have the opportunity to grow and develop as a professional through participation in and support for initiatives such as UNM Grand Challenges, generative AI projects, and library data projects.

Education and Experience

Minimum Qualifications:

        Earned Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited Library/Information Science program or equivalent, or an earned PhD in a related field.

Preferred Qualifications:

        Experience communicating with researchers and campus stakeholders about federal and other funder requirements regarding data management and sharing.

        Experience with practices and tools for the management, curation, open sharing, and preservation of research data in an academic setting.

        Experience consulting with researchers on the development of data management plans that address funder requirements.

        Experience with specialized management and curation of data from the social sciences, humanities, STEM, or GIS fields.

        Knowledge of leading practices in FAIR data sharing, including application of relevant metadata standards, and discovery and use of general purpose and specialized data repositories.

        Knowledge of frameworks for ethical data practice, including principles of tribal data sovereignty.

        Spoken or written proficiency in Spanish or an Indigenous language of the greater Southwest.

        A demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success, as well as working with broadly diverse communities. 

Primary Duties

        Lead initiatives to support FAIR data management and sharing across disciplines.

        Provide consultations and workshops on data management planning, ethical data practices, and research data curation.  

        Consult on the curation of datasets for publication in the UNM Digital Repository, Dryad, or other repositories as chosen by researchers.

        Serve as a data curator in the Data Curation Network (datacurationnetwork.org) and participate in Data Curation Network governance through committee and other services.

        Contribute to the College’s data science initiatives, including coordination of and participation in Software, Data, and Library Carpentry workshops.

        Stay informed of evolving policies, technologies, and best practices in data management and open scholarship.

        Build strategic partnerships within the university and beyond to foster interdisciplinary research and innovation.

        Actively engage in professional development and contribute to governance within the University Libraries.

        Engage in professional development through regional and national service.

        Contribute to the College and the profession through research and scholarship.

        Support the collaborative development and implementation of Graduate and Faculty Engagement programs, including reference consultations and library instruction.

The Environment:

The University of New Mexico is a member of the Association of Research Libraries, the Greater Western Library Alliance, the New Mexico Consortium of Academic Libraries, and Seminar on the Acquisition of Latin American Library Materials. ULLS leads the LIBROS Consortium that hosts the shared catalog for fourteen academic libraries in New Mexico. ULLS contains over 3 million volumes with specialized content in Latin American, Native American, and Southwest Hispanic studies spread across three branch libraries: Centennial Science and Engineering Library; Fine Arts & Design Library; and Zimmerman Library (social sciences, education, and humanities). Zimmerman Library also houses the Center for Southwest Research and Special Collections and a Regional Federal Depository Library Program.   

The CULLS grants bachelor, master, and doctoral degrees in its Organization, Information & Learning Sciences Program. The OILS Program prepares professionals to help individuals, groups, and organizations to learn in more effective ways. 

The UNM Press, the fourth largest university press west of the Rocky Mountains in publishing new titles, is also a part of CULLS. UNM Press produces scholarly books in the arts, humanities, and natural and social sciences—more specifically, in the areas of fine arts, Western history, Latin American studies, literature, poetry, environmental studies, archaeology, anthropology, and natural history.
