  • Provides general reference services to patrons in person and over the telephone by use of interviewing techniques, search organization (computer database, etc.) and networking.
  • Work on various tasks/projects as assigned (i.e., inventory).
  • Assists with collection development and materials selection based upon understanding of user needs.
  • Plans and presents library programs.
  • Teaches lab computer classes.
  • Provides computer and reference instruction to users.
  • Performs extensive research as needed to satisfy the informational needs of the user.
  • Serves on departmental and bureau task forces and committees to develop policies and procedures.
  • Special Requirements • NIMS IS-700, ICS-100, and ICS-200 within 6 months of employment • County employees are required to report for work during a state of emergency and are subject to recall around the clock for emergency response operations which may include duties other than those specified in this job description.

Education/Qualifications:

Education: Master of Library Science Degree from an ALA accredited college or university required. Experience: Six (6) months to one (1) year of experience working with the public.

Required Competencies:

  • Knowledge of effective public relations techniques.
  • Skill interpreting library policies, procedures and services to individuals and groups.
  • Knowledge of automated systems including ability to operate various types of library equipment and on-line bibliographic retrieval services.
  • Knowledge of modern principles, practices and methods of library science including knowledge of research techniques.
  • Financial Responsibilities: Accept, receive, and/or collect payments; and make recommendations that impact the budget.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Knowledge of books, authors and reader interest levels; some knowledge of resources in the community and the information needs of users.
  • Skill in selecting appropriate reading materials for users of varying reading skill levels.
  • Ability to use knowledge of information resources and networks to create unique responses to user questions
