John J. Burns Library at Boston College is seeking a Public Services and Instruction Intern who is currently enrolled in a MLIS/MLS program. This role is a paid opportunity for graduate students to gain archives and special collections instruction and public services experience.  

Responsibilities

Provide high levels of support for Burns Library Instruction and Public Services, including:

Assisting with instruction session planning, preparation, and digital activities  Assisting in instruction sessions led by Burns Public Services staff Answering ready and in-depth reference questions, for both in-person and remote researchers Reading room monitoring  Registering users in the request management system (Aeon) Informing patrons of policies and procedures  Circulating rare/unique, fragile materials Recognizing materials in need of conservation and submitting requests Opening and closing reading room duties Delivering copy requests and digital content in a timely manner Assisting with outreach activities such as social media posts, online and physical exhibit creation, and researching and writing blog posts.  Indirect supervision of student workers 

Qualifications

Required:

Current enrollment in a MLIS/MLS program Availability for weekday hours Monday through Friday, 9 am - 5 pm with occasional Wednesday evening shifts from 5-8 pm. (Flexible with a minimum of 10 hours per week; a maximum of 15 hours per week) Curiosity about library instruction, outreach, and special collections and archives work  An orientation to public services work and an interest and curiosity about  reference and instruction An understanding of information organization, research practices, and library support services Excellent reference service skills

Preferred:

One year commitment Completion of Information Sources & Services coursework Coursework in history or a related field

Details about the opening:

A minimum of 10 hours per week; a maximum of 15  hours per week  Position renewed on a semester basis  Pay rate is $20.00/hour.
