Part Time Library Assistant

The Troy Public Library located in Troy, NY, is seeking an enthusiastic and friendly Library Assistant to join our staff. This position is a part-time 20 hours per week position. Reporting to the Head of Circulation, the Library Assistant will assist patrons with locating and checking out materials, keep the library collection organized, assist with the setup of library programs, and other duties as assigned.

Distinguishing Features of the Class:

The work involves the performance of routine library clerical duties necessary for the proper organization and distribution of library materials. No prior knowledge of library procedures is required. Library Assistants are expected to work independently after training, and work under the direct supervision of higher level clerks and Librarians. The incumbent may be assigned to either the main library or any one of its branches. Does related work as required. 

Typical Work Activities: _(illustrative only) _

• Arranges or files materials according to library filing rules; 

• Performs routine searches of and updates to computer records; 

• Issues borrowers cards according to library procedures; 

• Performs routine circulation, reserve and overdue functions; 

• Answers the telephone and takes messages; 

• Operates office machinery. 

Full Performance Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Personal Characteristics: Working knowledge of office terminology, procedures and equipment as applied to library clerical work; working  knowledge of library filing and shelving rules; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability  to work well with people of all ages and backgrounds, ability to operate an alphanumeric keyboard such as a  typewriter, terminal or personal computer; tact and courtesy in dealing with staff and the public; ability to work a  schedule that may include evenings and Saturdays; physical ability commensurate with the demands of the position. 

**Minimum Qualifications: **

Possession of a high school diploma or GED.

Salary:

 This is a part-time position with a starting salary of $15.31 - $23.16 per hour based on experience and education.
