The Mill Valley Public Library is looking for a part-time librarian who is passionate about public service, shows initiative, and has a strong work ethic to work the adult reference desk. This is a great opportunity to get experience in reference work and reader’s advisory. You will work in a very fast-paced, collaborative environment.  

ESTIMATED NUMBER OF HOURS:

5 - 9 hours per week. Additional sub hours may be available. Applicant must be able to work Sunday (11:30am - 5pm) and Friday afternoon (1:30 - 5pm). Weeknight (until 8pm) availability is a plus.

Salary: $24.05 - $39.84/hour depending on experience and education.

ABOUT THE POSITION:

Staffing the Adult Reference Desk is the primary responsibility of this position. A knowledge of literature or the desire to read widely is essential in making book recommendations and is an important part of the job. The Mill Valley Library is fast-paced and innovative. The person in this position needs to learn new skills quickly, adapt easily to change, be detail-oriented, and patron focused.Many part-time staff are cross trained to work in other Departments as needed.

TYPICAL DUTIES:

  • Provide reference services including readers’ advisory. 
  • Provide excellent customer service to all patrons with consistency and in line with library policies.
  • Assist patrons troubleshooting technological issues on both library computers and personal devices.
  • Help with programming as needed.
  • Additional duties based on interests and demonstrated quality of work.


Requirements

Ideal Candidate
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Experience or interest in working the adult reference desk.
  • Must be detail-oriented and capable of problem-solving.
  • Able to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Assists in the general operation of the Library.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Self-motivation to learn new skills.
  • Knowledge of readers advisory.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience with integrated library automation system, preferably Sierra.
  • A Masters in Library Science (M.L.S or M.L.I.S.) or current enrollment in an ALA accredited school program.
  • Experience with other library duties (research, referrals and tech help).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, or similar applications, familiarity with both Macs and PCs and general ability to adapt to new software.
