Materials Handler (part-time) Pay Grade: 3 (Non-exempt)

Scheduled available

  • Part-time 16 hrs. a week  - Mondays 7am-12pm, Fridays 7am-12pm, and Saturdays 12pm-6pm  

  • Part-time 15 hrs. a week - Tuesdays 4pm-9pm, Thursdays 4pm-9pm, and Saturdays 1pm-6pm  

  • Part-time 15 hrs. a week  - Mondays 4pm-9pm, Wednesdays 4pm-9pm, and Saturdays 1pm-6pm  

  • Part-time 15 hrs. a week - Thursdays 5pm-9pm, Saturdays 7am-12pm, and Sundays 10am-4pm  

**Under the supervision of the Materials Handler Supervisor, materials handlers assist in coordination of the flow, handling, shelving, and organization of all library materials. **

Minimum Qualifications (education, experience, and certifications):

  • Relevant work experience
  • Basic computer skills and comfort with learning new technology

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in a public library
  • High school diploma or equivalency

  • Multilingual skills in English plus another language(s) relevant to the Skokie community

Essential Functions:

  • Assists with processing returned materials through the Automated Materials Handling system (AMH) and prepares carts of materials for shelving; may do basic troubleshooting with the AMH.
  • Participates in materials management activities, including but not limited to retrieving materials, preparing reserved items, shelving, rearrangement of materials on shelves, refilling displayed materials, repairing damaged materials, AV cleaning, assisting with materials withdrawn from the collection, and sorting donations.
  • Responds to general assistance inquiries regarding materials on hold, services, and information; may assist library users in accessing and retrieving materials.
  • Regular, predictable, and punctual attendance

Other Functions:

  • May serve on library committees
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

  • Work may include prolonged sitting, standing, stooping, bending, twisting, crouching, and sitting as well as physical mobility including ability to push loaded book carts that may weigh up to 200 pounds and lift 25 pounds.

  • Work includes general computer use

  • Ability to navigate the building, manual dexterity, and correctable vision to see small print are also required.

  • Noise level is generally moderate

  • Scheduling may require availability during any library operating hours, including days, evenings, weekends, and occasionally when the library is closed. Although a weekly schedule is established, the needs of the library may require scheduling changes and flexibility.

  • Employee required to park in designated area

  • The pay range for new hires in this position is $15.69 to $17.50 per hour. Offers are made within this range based on competencies, experience, and internal equity. Full grade range: $15.69-$23.53
