The City of Oxnard's Cultural and Community Services Department is seeking an Literacy Librarian. Oxnard Public Library is seeking a team-focused librarian with experience working with adult literacy services and programs. This position will be housed at the Oxnard Main Branch Library, and will work with all three branches with literacy services.    

WHAT YOU'LL DO:

  • Supporting adult literacy and language learners in reaching their goals.
  • Plan, coordinate, and facilitate a literacy program, events, and outreach focused on adult literacy and English language learners.
  • Plan, coordinate, and facilitate family literacy events.
  • Market and promote literacy services within the library.
  • Select and maintain library collections as assigned.
  • Assist patrons with excellent customer service, answering questions, complaints, and requests from the public.
  • Assist on reference desk for reference questions, readers advisory, and basic technology questions.
  • Assist on circulation desk to check in items or assist patrons checking out.
  • Other duties as assigned.

PAYROLL/CLASSIFICATION TITLE: Librarian 


DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:  This classification is distinguished from the Library Technician Senior in that it provides journey-level professional library services.


SUPERVISION EXERCISED / SUPERVISION RECEIVED:  Receives general supervision and is expected to prioritize work to meet deadlines and to keep the supervisor informed of issues that would impact achievement of a deadline, organizational policy or procedure or in consideration of risk management.


WORK SCHEDULE:  The normal work week is Monday through Thursday and every other Saturday and Sunday as assigned. Hours may include some evenings and/or nights.  

Essential Functions:
 

  • This class specification represents only the core areas of responsibilities; specific position assignments will vary depending on the needs of the Department.
  • Provides library services and professional support to the public; performs opening and closing procedures; responds to inquiries and reference requests; performs reference searches and provides resources or referrals; reviews and resolves customer service issues.
  • Plans, implements and promotes assigned programs and events; schedules resources; recommends and develops library collection for assigned area and monitors related budget; promotes library services and performs outreach within the community and with school groups and other organizations.
  • Provides technical guidance and instruction to patrons and staff on the use of online catalog and library resources, print materials and various related technology and equipment. May assist in recruiting, scheduling and training volunteers and reviewing work assignments.
  • This class specification represents only the core areas of responsibilities; specific position assignments will vary depending on the needs of the Department.
  • Maintains digital resources and database systems; prepares reports and program documentation; orders and maintains program resources; assists with circulation support services as needed.
  • Performs other duties of a similar nature and level as assigned.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:
 

EDUCATION:

Master’s degree in Library Science from a ALA accredited program OR 
Master's degree in Education.
The eligibility list that is created from this recruitment will only be used to fill future Literacy Liberian vacancies.

EXPERIENCE: 

Two (2) years of public library experience.

LICENSING/CERTIFICATIONS: 

Valid California Class C Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Must be able to speak and understand English to effectively communicate with fellow employees, customers, and vendors

Highly Desirable: Bilingual in Spanish
