Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

Academic Affairs is the central division for implementing the academic mission of the University of North Carolina Wilmington. Through effective academic policies, practices, and programs, it provides leadership for excellence in teaching, scholarship, and creative work as well as service to local, regional, and global communities.

UNCW Library supports the University's mission through the provision of information resources, services and programs relevant to the needs of its students, faculty and staff. It also serves as a rich cultural resource for the surrounding community and the region. To accomplish this mission, the library provides (1) diverse collections of informational resources in multiple formats and specialized technologies to enable the creation of new knowledge; (2) efficient access to those informational resources and technologies; (3) assistance and instruction in identifying, evaluating and interpreting information; (4) a safe and comfortable facility which stimulates intellectual curiosity and reflective thinking; and (5) programs that connect scholars and interested individuals with information and expertise to inspire lifelong learning.

Brief Summary of Work for this Position

The Library Technician provides front line services for patrons at the Library Help Desk in order to access, discover, and utilize library resources. This position assists patrons in locating and accessing library resources, answers questions about the Library and the campus, provides basic reference assistance, checks out/in library materials and assists with processing holds requests. In addition, this position maintains a thorough knowledge of circulation and library policies and interprets and enforces these policies as needed. This position also assists with shelving and stacks maintenance activities. This position processes course reserves including communicating with faculty and preparing course reserve materials for circulation. This position accurately collects library fines and fees and maintains accurate patron financial records. This position supervises student assistants during times the student supervisor is not present directing work assignments. Additionally, this position assists with special projects as assigned.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school diploma or equivalency and two years of experience in library services, office support, or related field; or equivalent combination of training and experience.

Preferred education, professional skills and experience

  • Previous library experience
  • Experience using an ILS system such as Sierra or Alma
  • Working knowledge of User Services processes such as check in/checkout, shelf reading, shelving, and inventory
  • Previous experience providing basic reference/research assistance
  • Experience with technology used in librariesRequired Certifications or licensure
