The Steger-South Chicago Heights Public Library is a small library in the far south suburbs of Chicago with a friendly staff, supportive patrons, and a positive atmosphere. 

The ideal candidate will work two evenings a week and Fridays from 10:00-5:00pm. Spanish speakers are especially invited to apply.

Library Assistants help patrons use their library by providing customer service at the circulation desk and by phone, developing and promoting the collection, and implementing library programming.

Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalency certificate

  • Ability to work pleasantly and courteously with the public and to exercise tact and good judgment

  • Ability to file alphabetically and numerically

  • Willingness and ability to work with the library's automated circulation system

  • Ability and willingness to answer reference questions

  • Ability to use Microsoft Word, Excel, and Publisher

  • Strong oral and written communication skills

Responsibilities: 

  • Process library card applications
  • Answer the phone, refer phone calls, and make calls
  • Print paging list and send out interlibrary loan items
  • Assist patrons with use of photocopy machine, fax machine, and computers as necessary
  • Assist patrons with reference questions and readers' advisory
  • Assist and instruct patrons in using library services, equipment, and facilities
  • Maintain confidentiality of information according to state statute and professional library ethics
  • Help with collection development as needed
  • Shelve items
  • Create, coordinate, and implement programs under the direction of the Outreach Coordinator
  • Visit area schools or events as needed
  • Other duties as assigned
