The Department:

The Santa Clara City Library is a department of the City and has positioned itself as a dynamic community hub, providing access to information, literacy resources, educational programming, and promotes civic engagement in Santa Clara. The Library Department is organized into seven divisions: Administration, Adult Services, Branch Services, Customer Services, Facilities, Technical and Technology Services and Youth Services. Santa Clara City Library is in the process of finalizing and implementing its new Strategic Plan that will support the direction of future library services. 

The Position:

The Santa Clara City Library is seeking an enthusiastic and innovative Adult Services Librarian to join our dynamic team. The ideal candidate will be passionate about fostering a vibrant library environment through engaging programming, effective collection development, exceptional customer service, and proactive outreach efforts. This position requires a creative individual who is dedicated to serving a diverse community and enhancing the library's role as a hub for the community.

Librarian I - Reference: This is the entry-level class within the professional Librarian series.  The class is distinguished from the Librarian II by the performance of more routine tasks and duties assigned to the position within the series.  This position is typically used as a training position, and employees need have only limited or no directly related professional experience. Examples of entry level librarian duties include program and project support; collection development of smaller sections of the collection; facilitating public programs and events; participation in outreach and community events, collaboration with colleagues to develop programs and services that reflect the interests and needs of our diverse population; the creation of displays, booklists, and marketing materials.

Librarian II – Reference: This is the full journey level class within the professional Librarian series. Employees at this level require only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and can independently and competently perform all operating procedures and functions of the work unit. Examples of journey-level librarian duties could include project management of a major program or systemwide service; collection development responsibilities for a significant part of the collection; design, implementation, and evaluation of a wide range of programs and events; development and maintenance of partnerships with local organizations, businesses, and community groups to promote library programs and services.

The annual salary range for Librarian I - Reference is $93,071.76 - $118,485.96. The annual salary range for Librarian II - Reference is $102,643.08 - $130,535.88.  This position may be filled at or near the bottom of the salary range.

Minimum Qualifications
 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Librarian I – Reference 

Minimum Education Requirements: Possession of a Masters' Degree in Library Information Science from an American Library Association accredited library school. 

Minimum Experience Requirements: No experience is required.

Acceptable Substitution: None. 

License/Certifications: Possession of an appropriate, valid California driver's license is required at time of appointment and for the duration of employment.

Desirable Qualifications: Experience working in a public library or in a customer service position.

Other Requirements:  Must be able to perform all the essential functions of the job assignment.
May be required to work evenings and weekends. 

Librarian II – Reference 

Minimum Education Requirements: Possession of a Masters Degree in Library/Information Science from an American Library Association accredited library school.

Minimum Experience Requirements:

  • Two (2) years of recent increasingly responsible professional library experience performing duties similar to a Librarian I for the Santa Clara City.  
  • Experience providing reference service is required.  

Acceptable Substitution: None.  

License/Certifications: Possession of an appropriate, valid California driver's license is required.

Desirable Qualifications: Experience in supervising the work of others and/or significant experience as a project or program lead is desirable.

Other Requirements:  

  • Performs physical tasks, such as lifting bending, stooping, reaching, carrying, and walking up and down stairs.  
  • Must be able to lift and carry library materials weighing up to 10 lbs.  
  • Must be able to perform all the essential functions of the job assignment.  
  • May be required to work evenings and weekends.
