Job Description

Ohio University Libraries are seeking energetic and forward-thinking applicants with a commitment to continuous learning to serve as the learning services educational technology and arts librarian.

Reporting to the head of learning services, the learning services educational technology librarian plays a critical role in executing the University Libraries' strategic initiatives and fulfilling the University's mission by creating and enhancing library learning objects in support of academic excellence. This position creates and manages the Libraries' asynchronous learning modules in the campus' new learning management system, Canvas. This person will build and maintain collaborative relationships with faculty, the Office of Information Technology and the Office of Instructional Design, and support instructors with integrating library instruction modules and library licensed content into Canvas. The learning services educational technology librarian partners with colleagues to create and assess interactive and video tutorials, online quizzes, assignments, etc. to enable scaling of the Libraries' instructional programs. The learning services educational technology librarian also serves as subject specialist with a focus on the arts and provides instruction, reference, and consultation services to faculty and students in assigned academic areas. Serving as a member of the arts and humanities disciplinary team, they will cooperatively build sustainable collections for the University's research and instructional needs.

Position Responsibilities


  • Develop, deliver, and assess online asynchronous instruction and reusable learning objects, assignments, and activities through the campus learning management system (Canvas), tutorial platforms, and library research guides, to enable scaling of the library's instructional programs.
  • Partners with the Office of Information Technology and the Office of Instructional Design to manage the Libraries' Canvas learning modules.
  • Supports faculty with the migration or addition of library instruction modules and library licensed content into Canvas.
  • Continually develops knowledge of online learning pedagogy and learning technology applications.
  • Provides consulting services and training for colleagues in creating learning modules.
  • Collaborates with department colleagues and campus partners to increase open educational resource adoption.
  • Collaborates with others in the Libraries and other University units to develop and provide programming, assessments, and digital learning resources for library orientations, educational events in the Libraries, and community engagement and civic literacy initiatives.
  • Participates in the work of the department which may include projects to support digital humanities tools in the classroom, professional development for instructors and librarians on information literacy, and programming for affordable learning initiatives.
  • Serves as subject specialist to one more academic areas within the arts; provides consultation, instruction, and reference services to faculty and students in assigned subject areas.
  • As a member of the Arts & Humanities Disciplinary Team, works collaboratively and cooperatively to build and maintain collections that support curriculum and research needs. Partners with team members to provide basic lower-level instruction, reference and consultation services to students in the arts and humanities.
  • Engages in regular professional development through research, publications, presentations, and participation in regional, national, and/or international professional bodies as part of a continuing commitment to bringing best practices and innovative services to the Libraries.
  • Serves on Libraries committees, task forces, and/or other groups in support of advancing the Libraries strategic goals.




The Environment


The learning services educational technology and art librarian will be a critical member of a new Learning Services department, located within the Libraries' Division of Research and Education. The Division, which includes Research Services, User Services, Learning Services, and Library IT, is in the first year of a reorganization to increase collaboration and forward-thinking library work. This re-organization will re-orient the work of librarians serving in outward-facing roles to emphasize and prioritize student- and faculty-centered services for student success and faculty teaching and research excellence. This restructuring will allow for greater flexibility and efficiency in the delivery of traditional subject librarian work such as collection development and traditional library instruction.

Minimum Qualifications

• Master's Degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA accredited school or from a master's level program in library and information studies accredited or recognized by the appropriate national body of another country. *

• Familiarity with or demonstrated ability in producing video tutorials, online instructional content, or other asynchronous learning modules.

• Experience with and willingness to utilize and promote emerging technologies and technology-mediated instructional methods.

• Effective communication skills

• Ability to work with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.

• Commitment to continuous improvement and development.

*A bachelor's degree and a minimum of 2 years of full-time, substantial, and directly related library experience in an academic library required in lieu of an ALA master's degree.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Teaching or presentation experience.
  • Experience working in an academic library.
  • Demonstrated success with collaborative assignments.
  • Undergraduate degree or coursework in the arts.
  • Collection management experience or coursework relevant to building and maintaining library collections.
  • Advanced technology skills, including experience with learning management systems, audio and video recording and editing applications, and other multimedia programs.
  • Previous experience using the Springshare LibWizard platform to create tutorials and assess student learning.
  • Familiarity or experience with developing library content for learning management systems, such as Canvas.

Pay Rate

The target salary range is $44,592 to $59,085 commensurate with the selected candidate's education and experience while considering internal equity.
