Head of Circulation Services

The Palos Heights Public Library is looking for a service-oriented, collaborative leader to join our management team as the Head of the Circulation Department. In addition to overseeing the operation of this department, this person will play a key role in the overall operation of the library, helping to coordinate projects with various other departments and doing whatever it takes to help us provide the best possible service to the residents of Palos Heights.

Essential Functions: 

• Serves on the library’s Management Team, providing leadership for staff in all departments.

• Hires, trains, directs, and mentors all Circulation Department staff.

• Works at the Circulation Desk, assisting patrons in-person, online, and via phone.

• Maintains the integrity of patron accounts.

• Resolves issues with patron records and billing.

• Interprets and enforces library policies and procedures.

• Reports to the Library Director.

Necessary Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience.

• Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with people from a wide range of backgrounds and in high-pressure situations.

• Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills in a collaborative environment. 

• Excellent customer service skills.

• Ability to be accurate, detail-oriented, and efficient in the performance of assigned duties. 

• Ability to exercise leadership and provide direction.

• Ability to exercise reasonable and independent judgment and discretion. 

• Ability to adapt to and effectively implement change.

Additional Desired Qualifications:

• 5 years of experience working in a public library.
• 2 years of experience in a supervisory role.
• Master's degree in library science.
• Familiarity with SWAN consortium and its circulation practices.
• Experience working with SirsiDynix Symphony.
