Position Overview
The University of Kansas (KU) Libraries invites applications for a tenure-track librarian to join the faculty. The Faculty & Community Engagement Librarian will support the engagement activities of KU Libraries, collaborating with a variety of internal and external stakeholders.
One of the three goals of KU Libraries 2024-2028 Strategic Plan is to "elevate our communities by fostering individual wellbeing, sparking interpersonal connections, and advancing society." The Faculty and Community Engagement Librarian plays a key role in advancing this objective by facilitating relationships to communities within our university and beyond. This position works to connect and harmonize the outreach and engagement activities of Libraries colleagues with university partners, seeking cooperative opportunities and supporting strategic priorities. Additionally, the Faculty and Community Engagement Librarian, in collaboration with others in the Libraries, connects Libraries' programming, activities, and resources with communities in Lawrence, the state of Kansas, and beyond. The successful candidate maintains and supports existing programming while growing and strengthening KU Libraries' community engagement and exhibitions efforts. This position requires flexibility, creativity, and collaboration with a broad range of partners to achieve the Libraries' goals.
The Faculty & Community Engagement Librarian is a member of the Research & Learning department at KU Libraries and reports to the Head of the Center for Faculty Initiatives and Engagement. As a member of the Center for Faculty Initiatives and Engagement, this position supports KU faculty and staff through innovative collaboration and engagement in teaching, research, and publishing activities and through expanded engagement with their community partners. This position works closely with colleagues in the libraries' Research Engagement Division and beyond to accomplish shared goals, and works to strategically address the libraries' priorities.

This is a full-time, 12-month, tenure-track faculty position. Rank considerations are based on professional performance, research, and service experience sufficient to qualify for appointment at the rank of Assistant Librarian or Associate Librarian. Startup funds and annual development funds are provided to tenure-track faculty to support scholarly activities.

Job Description
PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES (70%)
• Develops, executes, and assesses programming, exhibits, and events that facilitate and promote discovery and use of KU scholarship and KU Libraries resources and services resulting in equitable and accessible opportunities for research and learning, knowledge creation and exchange. Identifies, develops, manages, coordinates, and assesses initiatives related to engaged teaching, engaged research, and community innovation.
• Grows and develops relationships and collaborative partnerships with local, regional, and state communities that lead to mutually beneficial research, community development, programming, and events. Some potential local partners include the Lawrence Public Library, Haskell Indian Nations University, and NEKLS.
• Represents KU Libraries on University committees and workgroups charged to identify, recognize, and promote community engagement efforts at KU. Some potential university partners could include the Center for Service Learning, The Commons, Office of Research, Office of Faculty Affairs, Hall Center for the Humanities, and Spencer Museum of Art.
•Promotes, encourages, and maintains a cohesive awareness of engagement activities and events across KU Libraries, both libraries- and community-led, in close collaboration with colleagues throughout the libraries.
Enhances engagement activities throughout KU Libraries by harmonizing efforts, minimizing duplication, and fostering connections between relevant work.
• Develops assessments and metrics to assess effectiveness of programming and engagement initiatives.
Participates in services and program development such as Research Sprints, Haricombe Gallery exhibits, and Software and Data Carpentries.
• Works as a member of the Libraries' Center for Faculty Initiatives and Engagement to develop and implement a collaborative and programmatic approach to outreach, teaching, and research support across the University of Kansas campuses in support of Center, Libraries and University strategic priorities and goals.
• In collaboration with colleagues, supports researcher needs through consultations and training across disciplines. Responds to instructional and research needs across disciplines as part of the Research & Learning team. The librarian promotes the integration of information literacy into the curriculum, measures student learning outcomes, and assesses programming in support of student success.
• Works collaboratively as a member of project teams and other groups to advance the libraries' strategic priorities. Fosters a highly collegial, collaborative, and open environment that supports colleagues and productive change.
RESEARCH (20%)
Contributes to the profession's collective knowledge by engaging in scholarly research activity.
Research may involve the publication of articles, books, book reviews, grant-supported inquiry, or editorial work (see Promotion and Tenure Procedures at KU, Spring 2017).
SERVICE (10%)
• Engages in service to the Libraries, the University and to professional organizations by participating in committee work, projects, and other contributory achievements.
Required Qualifications
• ALA-accredited master's degree in Library/Information Science or equivalent from a foreign institution by time of appointment.
Preferred Qualifications
• One year of experience developing, organizing, and planning public programming such as speaker events, workshops, exhibits, etc.
• Evidence of building and sustaining relationships in collaborative partnerships especially in academic, cultural, or community institutions.
• Knowledge of, and experience with, assessment techniques used to evaluate the effectiveness of academic or cultural programming.
• Effective written and oral communication skills as demonstrated by the candidate's application materials, other examples of written work and/or publications, and public speaking/presentation experience.
