Position: Dr. Helen Fagin Collection Archival Fellowship

Name of Organization: Jane Bancroft Cook Library

Learning Objectives:

  • Apply best practices for preserving, evaluating, and digitizing archival materials i.e. documents, photographs, media
  • Learn and apply digitize best practice to accurately preserve collection
  • Gain hands-on experience digitizing and amplifying an archival collection
  • Develop comprehensive metadata to increase discoverability
  • Develop proficiency using archival software's and digitization tools to preserve and digitize collection
  • Cultivate interpersonal and critical thinking skills when in engaging with sensitive information, survivor testimonies, oral histories, personal narratives, perspectives on human rights abuses, etc.
  • Foster interpersonal skills when working directly with Fagin Family
  • Develop marketing skills when amplifying collection
  • Gain project management skills while coordinating outreach and collection amplificationefforts i.e. guest speakers etc.

Examples of Duties

  • Digitize and preserve Dr. Helen Fagin collection
  • Digitize collection for preservation and research purposes
  • Assess and evaluate archival materials
  • Curate and amplify collection
  • Conduct research to provide additional content for exhibits
  • Create web pages (i.e. wiki) that provide context i.e. background information, glossary, maps, etc.
  • Create comprehensive metadata
  • Create databases for media, photographs, and newspapers, etc. collections
  • Create and execute a social media marketing plan to amplify collection
  • In conjunction with supervisor will build partnerships with museums, libraries, colleges, universities, etc. to amplify collection
  • Develop and lead workshops focused on digitization, preservation, and amplification of the collections
  • Develop and lead presentations about Dr. Fagin's legacy
  • Work with educators and organizations in the development curriculum and online materials
  • Travel to museums and organizations to lead presentations and workshops regarding Dr. Fagin's legacy
  • Work directly with Dr. Fagin's family to ensure that collection is amplified and shared in the best way possible
  • Assist with the identification, digitization, and amplification of legacy collectionsMinimum Qualifications
  • Current enrolled master's student in their second semester or second year of graduate program
  • Enrolled in a masters within the following fields: librarianship, archives, history, education, sociology, humanities, or related fields
  • Basic knowledge of digitization, metadata standards (e. g., Dublin Core, EAD), digital preservation, and primary research process
    • process of converting analog to digital format
  • Understanding of archival principles, processing, and cataloging collections
  • Awareness of copyright laws and ethical consideration when working with sensitive topics i. e. holocaust, genocide, and human rights
  • Understanding the importance of histories and archival sources
  • Proficiency in word, excel, access, project management software
  • Strong writing and communication skillsPreferred Qualifications
