Position Summary

The Director of Gerald R. Sherratt Library is responsible for overseeing and developing traditional and innovative library services. This role involves collaborating with library staff, faculty, and university administration to translate vision into practice, responding to the rapidly changing and complex higher education environment. The Director balances existing library services and resources with emerging technologies, ensuring the library remains a vital resource for patrons. The Director provides leadership for every aspect of library operations and manages Gerald R. Sherratt Library personnel, services, and resources in ways that support the mission of Southern Utah University and serve the needs of students, faculty, and other users. Essential FunctionsDevelops, administers, and promotes the academic programs and academic support functions of the library. Works with the department chair to support library faculty in their roles as librarians, teachers, and scholars.

  • Coordinates the planning and execution of all Library budgets. Coordinates the review, establishment, implementation, and interpretation of new and existing library policies to ensure high quality library services to meet the needs of the faculty and students, both on campus and at a distance.
  • Supervises the maintenance and improvement of library services, collections, and facilities.
  • Coordinates efforts in identifying, writing, and administering outside grants in support of library initiatives, collections, and programs. Develops recommendations for the nomination, retention, promotion, tenure, and compensation of library faculty, department chairs, and staff members
  • Develops and maintains high quality academic and curricular resources in support of SUU's undergraduate and graduate programs. Provides proactive leadership in the development and implementation of new services and technologies.
  • Provides leadership and coordinates library public relations. Hires and develops personnel necessary to ensure and maintain quality library services. Participates in scholarly activity, professional and community service as required by the University.
  • Represents the Library on appropriate academic and administrative committees or councils, and builds/maintains strong working relationships with other campus entities.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Graduate degree from an ALA accredited library school or equivalent experience and education.
  • 8 years of library experience including at least 5 years of successful administrative experience in an academic library environment including supervising others.
  • Record of planning skills, including budget management, goal-setting, and strategic plan implementation.
  • Record of increased management responsibility over the last five years.
  • Excellent collaboration and negotiation skills, including the ability to work cooperatively with students, faculty, staff, alumni, and the general public
  • Strong analytic and strategic skills in prioritization, resource allocation, and decision-making.
  • Knowledgeable implementation and utilization of library technology.
  • Knowledgeable about current and emerging trends in higher education and library services.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills.Preferred Qualifications
  • A PhD, with ABD considered, from an accredited college or university in a curriculum area offered at SUU.
  • 5 or more years of supervisory experience.
  • 5 or more years of budget management.Supplemental Information
