Director Of Collections Strategy

Job Summary:

The University of Wisconsin-Madison Libraries seeks an innovative and collaborative leader to oversee collections strategy at our world-class research and teaching institution. The Director of Collections Strategy provides leadership and direction for the UW-Madison Libraries collection development and e-resources licensing. This position collaborates with library staff from across campus and at other institutions to facilitate access to information resources in support of the university's teaching, research, and service missions. This position reports to the Associate Dean for Collections. The Director of Collections Strategy supervises two full-time academic staff members and one full-time university staff member.Responsibilities:

Directs or serves as a member of library senior leadership, overseeing a portfolio which may contain one or more libraries or units. Leads or participates in the strategic planning and implementation of policies, procedures, and major initiatives. Directs decisions which have a long-term and measurable impact on operations and solves problems which are complex, strategic, and multi-faceted.

• 10% Provides vision and direction for collections, services, technology, operations, and space management
• 5% Directs or assists in strategic planning and the establishment of long-range research and instructional goals
• 15% Leads major initiatives and organizational change efforts. Manages and prioritizes goals which fulfill the mission of the library
• 10% Exercises supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of at least 2.0 full-time equivalent (FTE) employees
• 10% Represents library interests on committees and events relevant to the strategic direction of the library
• 15% Leads teams dealing with complex issues that have multiple touchpoints and stakeholders
• 10% Develops and manages complex budgets. Allocates resources with substantial discretion, balancing multiple priorities
• 5% Cultivates and maintains relationships with school and campus leadership, donors, collectors, and professional colleagues
• 5% Ensures compliance with accreditation standards and reporting obligations
• 10% Oversees licensing activities. Participates in licensing activities as appropriate, including negotiating licenses with vendors.
• 5% Communicates with campus stakeholders including shared governance and academic departments on library collections issues.Tasks:
• Leads the development, implementation, and interpretation of collection development and collection management policies and procedures. Negotiates with and maintains productive relationships with publishers and vendors.
• Develops and implements strategies to evaluate and assess collections. Provides oversight and management for the collections budget, including endowments.
• Directs, coordinates, supports, and facilitates the collection development activities of subject specialists across the UW-Madison Libraries.
• Collaborates with collection coordinators for social sciences, humanities, sciences, and international and area studies on collection development projects.
• Provides leadership for collection development activities and initiatives with partner libraries and campus stakeholders.
• Collaborates with stakeholders from key consortium groups on network-level collection development and management strategies. Leads shared print initiatives. Actively participates in and represents UW-Madison on governance and consortium committees.
• Hires, manages, and supervises three direct reports: two Electronic Resources Management Librarians and one Electronic Resources Management Specialist.
• Collaborates closely with staff in Scholarly Communications, Acquisitions, Cataloging, and other departments on collections-related goals.
• Stays informed of trends and issues in libraries, with particular focus on topics related to collection development and collection strategy.
• Contributes to professional library organizations. Collaborates with library and campus committees and outreach activities to further the library's mission. Participates in research and scholarship, as appropriate.Institutional Statement on Diversity:

Required Master's of Library Science (MLS) degreeQualifications:

Required Qualifications:

• Minimum of three years working in professional positions in academic libraries or academic library consortia
• Experience managing budgets
• Experience working with vendors
• Supervisory experience
• Strong communication skills
• Demonstrated knowledge of licensing for e-resources

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience with enterprise library systems such as Ex Libris/ALMA and OCLC
• Demonstrated knowledge of data analysis and visualization
• Experience working within a library consortium
• Experience in collection development in academic libraryWork Type:

This position may require some work to be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. Some work may be performed remotely, at an offsite, non-campus work location.

Typical work hours are Monday through Friday, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. The work schedule for this position is typically 60% onsite and 40% remote work.Appointment Type, Duration:
