Job Summary:

Reporting to the Dean and Vice Provost for University Libraries, the Director of Advancement and Communications leads the team that supports and moves forward critical goals of the University Libraries through strategic communications to both internal and external stakeholders, donor engagement and integrated marketing.

This position serves as the leader in developing and implementing cohesive, integrated communications and marketing strategies that strengthens the Libraries brand, engages staff and students, and enhances visibility of its mission to support world class teaching and research.

The Director leads the Libraries communications team in managing campaigns and initiatives, encompassing email, web, social media, print and website. This position is also responsible for managing media relations and communication strategies for central or campus priorities. The Director oversees the planning, implementation and evaluation of programs and initiatives that increase donor engagement and investments and collaborates with University and Wisconsin Foundation and Alumni Association (WFAA) partners to ensure strategic alignment.

Develops and executes the strategic direction for externally focused programs and initiatives, which commonly include donor events, communications, and stewardship, in coordination with other development executives.

  • 20% Leads and oversees the school/college/division strategy related to partnership, marketing, and communications that may include functions such as public relations, alumni relations, and government affairs
  • 15% Sets goals for key development programs in concert with the other university development programs
  • 15% Develops and implements the external relations initiatives of the school/college/division within the context of the campaign and beyond
  • 5% Directs and oversees financial management of a unit
  • 15% Exercises supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of at least 2.0 full-time equivalent (FTE) employees
  • 30% Serves as the primary contact and liaison with internal and external stakeholdersTasks:
  • Leads the development and implementation of communications for internal stakeholders, including leadership and staff, to maximize engagement and strengthen collaborative efforts.
  • Develops the communication, branding, and marketing strategies for external campaigns and initiatives, including print, social media, web presence, and other modes of communication.
  • Works closely with the libraries' leadership, management, and staff to develop content for internal and external communications plus fundraising campaigns.
  • Works collaboratively with the University Foundation and Alumni Association (WFAA) and others to build and engage donors through fundraising efforts and planned giving.
  • Develops relationships with central campus communications, media, and other campus partners to work collaboratively and increase the visibility of the Libraries and their work.
  • Directs the day-to-day operations of the communications team, including supervising 2 FTE plus freelance writers or content creators necessary to complete projects.
  • Identifies and develops internal operations policies and procedures to provide unified communications across all UW-Madison Libraries.
  • Analyzes trends and feedback to adjust or implement operation strategies.
  • Participates in professional development opportunities, both locally and nationally, and represents UW-Madison as appropriate.

  • Experience translating strategic priorities into executable plans and project management
