The Reaching Across Illinois Library System (RAILS) has a current opening for the Communications Intern. We are looking for an individual to help work on projects related to RAILS communication channels. Help us reach our member libraries and tell their story!

The Communication Intern will work on a variety of projects including writing, editing, curating, and creating content via the RAILS website, social media, and our e-newsletter. This is a six-month position, ending on June 30, 2025.

Selected Responsibilities:

Education:

Currently pursuing or completed bachelor’s degree or equivalent in library science, English, communications, marketing, or a related degree.

Selected Knowledge/Experience:

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word and Drupal to write, edit, and publish accessible library-related content
  • Knowledge of the current issues and challenges facing libraries of all types (academic, public, school, and special) 
  • Preferred: experience working in libraries
  • Preferred: experience managing several simultaneous projects and achieving deadlines

Selected Skills/Abilities:

  • Works or aspires to work in libraries
  • Strong writing and editing skills
  • Ability to write for various audiences
  • Ability to work effectively with minimal supervision

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:

  • Position will be based out of the RAILS Burr Ridge office
  • Comfortable office working environment
  • Ability to communicate in person and via phone, videoconferencing, and electronic mail
