William & Mary Libraries support and enhance teaching and research and foster intellectual curiosity, creativity, and lifelong learning.Position SummaryWilliam & Mary Libraries is seeking an hourly Circulation Department Assistant to work a daytime shift Monday-Friday from 10:00am and 2:00pm, with some flexibility. Reporting to the Head of Circulation, the Assistant staffs the circulation desk and ensures that library users receive excellent service to find the library materials and information that they need, checks in and out materials, while providing a welcoming and inclusive space to support teaching and learning. The Assistant will help direct the student employees, and work on projects as needed. The successful candidate will have excellent interpersonal skills and strong computer skills. The Assistant will work closely with colleagues in the Circulation team; an ability to work well with others and solve problems is essential. This job requires the ability to lift 20 pounds, push a cart full of books, reach, stoop, and climb stepstools to retrieve and shelve materials.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities include: Staff the circulation service desk checking in and out materials, interpreting library policies and procedures for patrons and providing users with information on materials, facilities, and events. Communicate clearly and with diplomacy, both verbally and in writing with all patrons and maintain confidentiality of patron records and security of library systems. Manage requests and questions received via email or in person by routing to the appropriate department. Supervising and directing student assistants. Process delivery and reserve requests. At times serve as person in charge of the building, including handling emergencies. Respond to building issues and emergencies using good judgement as well as established procedures. Other duties as assigned such as office organization and maintenance of the library and offsite stacks collections.

This is a 10-month hourly position with unpaid time off during June, July, and over two holiday breaks.

Required Qualifications

  • High School Graduate or equivalent
  • Valid driver's license to drive library vehicles
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate positively and professionally, both verbally and in writing
  • Previous experience providing customer service in a public facing environment
  • Demonstrated proficiency in computer skills and data entry to include Internet browsers and Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in any field from an accredited institution
  • Ability to work independently, to identify problems and solutions, to initiate and implement solutions
  • Experience working in a library
  • Experience working in higher education
