**Position Overview: ** Entry-Level Staff Position

The Society of the Four Arts Children’s Library provides library services and programs for children, families, schools, and other organizations.  The Children’s Library Staff Assistant is responsible primarily for Front Desk circulation duties and preparation of children’s programming.  Ability to assist with programming, and other duties assigned by supervisor, as needed.

Describe the functions of this job:

·         Performs all opening and closing procedures

·         Checks materials in and out to patrons and the daily check-in of Book Drop Return materials

·         Assists patrons in locating materials and orients them to the physical arrangement of materials throughout  the building, especially new or prospective members

·         Maintains flyers, refills information/brochures/print materials/signage

·         Informs patrons concerning membership renewal and contacts patrons regarding materials, etc.

·         Answers phone and responds to online inquiries for information

·         Assists patrons with Wi-Fi use, technology questions, web site and online library catalog

·         Performs ongoing and project-based collection maintenance of all materials including shelving items, shelf reading, shifting collections, general cleaning, arrangement of library materials, and organization of collections (requires ability to lift to 45 pounds and/or climb a ladder)

·         Maintains the neat, orderly, and user-friendly appearance of all patron-staff common areas

·         Creates and maintains displays

·         Sets up and breaks down equipment, chairs, tables, etc. for indoor and outdoor programs

·         Prepares, sets-up, and cleans-up thematic projects, crafts, and snacks

·         Assists story hour / story time / field trips and groups tours

·         Records patron reservations of pre-scheduled events and maintains daily statistics

·         Transacts sales

·         Performs other Library and administrative tasks as required

Enthusiasm and energy for initiating and participating in the work of the library

A positive approach and understanding of families and children

Patience and diplomacy in dealing with visitors and an ability to exhibit a service orientation towards staff and community members

Prior experience working with children, comfortable working with all ages

Some knowledge of Children’s Literature

Attention to detail with organizational ability

Use of good judgment, consideration and reflective of The Society’s policies

Understanding of the importance of confidentiality and the priorities of safety and security

A willingness to train and learn new skills

List any specialized knowledge an individual needs to possess to be selected for this job:

2 years of experience in a library setting, school, and/or in a childcare facility

Computer and technology competency

Education:

A High School Diploma required; Bachelor’s Degree optional

Work Hours:

Part Time: 21-25 hours / week dependent upon Saturday rotation schedule; occasional Special or Large Program that requires all staff to be present; flexibility with scheduling hours when additional coverage needed

Children’s Library Hours:

Mondays through Fridays – 10:00 a.m. – 4:45 p.m.

Saturdays 10:00 a.m. – 12:45 p.m. (During November – April)

A Background Check will be conducted prior to the hiring of the successful candidate
