NSLD Children's Services is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic, part-time (20-25 hr. per week) Children's Librarian or Library Assistant. North Suburban Library District has two building locations: NSLD/Loves Park and NSLD/Roscoe, serving a population of 69,307 in the following communities: Machesney Park, Loves Park, Roscoe, and some areas of Boone County and Rockford.  

A kid friendly and welcoming atmosphere encourages self-directed learning at NSLD. While play is important when dealing with children, dedication in working hard to serve our patrons takes precedence for NSLD staff.  Literacy practices are promoted to educators, children and their caregivers with creativity, compassion and a sense of enjoyment. Careful thought and intention are put into each book recommendation, classroom collection, program and service we offer. NSLD Children's Services is a busy, dynamic department that wears many different "hats" and we are excited to welcome another go-getter to our team.

The ideal candidate will:

  • Enjoy, and have excellence and experience in, working directly with children and their families, caregivers, and educators.
  • Have a Bachelor's degree in Education or Library Science.
  • Have at least one year of experience in early childhood or elementary education - or equivalent experience in providing library services and programs to children.
  • Enjoy working both independently and with a team.
  • Be willing to work one or two weeknights and one or two Saturdays per month.
  • Maintain a positive attitude.
  • Be willing to adjust scheduled hours to fill in for absent staff and library events.
  • Commit to working school holidays, including, spring, summer, and winter breaks.
  • Attend meetings and library training as requested.

Responsibilities and expectations include, but are not limited to: Staffing the Children's Services desk to provide reference and reader's advisory, including help with catalog use, self-checkout, patron computers, library apps and online services. Possessing the energy and physical ability to shelve materials and help maintain the organization of our physical collection and department spaces. Assisting with, and/or implementing program events/activities and services as assigned: in person-on and off site, passive and virtual, including school field trips, visits, tours, and library instruction. Experience with, or the aptitude to learn, library technology, procedures, and systems.  Bachelor's degree in education or library science preferred. Equivalent experience considered.  Working at both library locations is required. Ability to consistently work scheduled hours a must. Own means of transportation necessary.  Salary range dependent on qualifications and experience.
