In this role, you will closely collaborate with the Head of Youth Services to bring exciting programs, events, and activities to life for children and their families, while also supporting the daily operations of the Youth Services Department. 

You’ll contribute to the development and implementation of engaging programs tailored for youth from birth through thirteen. We are looking for someone with a passion for youth literature, a love for working with children, and experience with this age group. 

Creativity and a knack for designing fun, inventive programs are essential. May include story times, book discussions, craft programs, summer reading events, etc.

Effectively uses and promotes the library collections and electronic resources and assists with children's collection development in all formats. Provides reference and readers advisory services to children, parents, teachers, and caregivers as needed.

Provides excellent customer service to the public in person and over the phone and interprets library services and policies to patrons in a clear and courteous manner. Actively participates in staff development and training opportunities when appropriate and embraces opportunities to learn in a changing environment. Circulation desk coverage as needed.

Tuesday & Thursday 3:30-8:30pm, Wednesday 2:00-8:00pm and 3 Saturdays per month 10:00-2:00 pm for an average of 19 hours per week

Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience.

Experience: Experience working with children required. Work experience in a public library preferred. Candidates should have a strong knowledge of children's and young adult literature. 

Additional skills: Commitment to excellent customer service with demonstrated enthusiasm, patience, and flexibility when working with the public. Knowledge of search techniques using print and electronic resources and an ability to instruct others in their use. Experience using an integrated library system (knowledge of Evergreen is a plus) and programs such as word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation applications, as well as office equipment such as copiers and printers. Familiarity with social media. Ability to create positive working relationships and collaborate successfully with co-workers; ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Experience in planning and presenting children's programs. Artistic and/or crafting talents a plus!

Physical requirements: Ability to carry books (up to 20-30 lbs), push book carts (up to 150 lbs), bend, stretch, grasp, etc. to retrieve library materials; ability to view computer screens for extended periods.
