The Jones Library Inc., seeks a detail-oriented, organized and creative individual to serve as its Assistant Head of Technical Services/Cataloging Specialist. This position is responsible for ordering, processing and cataloging library materials, balancing funds and accounts, working with staff and vendors, and assuring the accuracy of our library system and public catalog.    The Jones Library and Branches strive to foster an inclusive environment and place high value on composing a staff that is as diverse as the population we serve.

**POSITION DESCRIPTION **

Assistant Head of Technical Services/Cataloging Specialist

Library Services FLSA – Non-Exempt SEIU Level E

**Job Summary: ** Performs a variety of technical and clerical work in acquisitions, cataloging, and processing of library materials. Orders materials using online computerized systems. Takes a lead in updating department workflow using current technology. Demonstrates excellent customer service at assigned public service desk shifts.  Provides instruction and direction to staff in the absence of the Head of Technical Services.

**Supervision Received: ** Works under the general supervision of the Head of Technical Services, who provides instruction as needed. After initial learning period, performs duties independently, referring unusual situations to supervisor.

**Supervision Exercised: ** Assists in training hourly employees and volunteers. May be expected to help train and assist lower level, new, or part-time employees, as directed by the supervisor. In the absence of the Head of Technical Services, responsible for providing instruction and direction to Technical Services staff, volunteers, and interns.  

**Major Duties: ** ·   Performs all phases of acquisitions as needed. Prepares orders, requisitions, and correspondence for library materials, supplies, and/or equipment. Interacts with multiple vendors. Uses online computerized ordering systems.  Maintains system for tracking funds,  invoices and the status of orders. Utilizes Evergreen ILS acquisitions functionality for tracking of library materials.

·   Reviews and inputs requests for orders. Checks against present holdings, finds bibliographic information, and works closely with internal professional staff (e.g., materials selectors; the business office).

·   Imports and edits MARC records received from vendors, as needed. Catalogs and classifies print and nonprint materials, as assigned. May perform original cataloging, with classification and subject headings provided or reviewed by professional staff.

·   Performs continuous editing of the online catalog, correcting errors found. Prepares reports as directed to assure catalog accuracy, such as record updates or cancelled orders.

·   Takes a lead in updating department workflows using current technologies.

·   Withdraws and supervises withdrawal of materials from the collections. Contacts the service provider for pick-up of withdrawn materials.

·   Completely processes or supervises the processing of print and nonprint circulating library material using appropriate technology. Assures accuracy in all procedures.

·   Provides customer service during regularly assigned shifts on a public service desk, performing tasks such as providing patron assistance, giving basic information and directions, charging and discharging materials, answering incoming calls, renewing patron library cards, and placing patron holds, etc.   ·   Participates on staff, consortia, town or library-organization committees as is suitable.

·   Keeps current on topics relevant to technical services, acquisitions, collections or cataloging through professional development opportunities, as able.

·   Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

**Minimum Qualifications: ** ·  Graduation from high school or equivalent PLUS two years of post-secondary education or training in library science, liberal arts, education or a related field, AND at least two years of experience in library technical services or any equivalent combination of education and experience.

·  Knowledge of library procedures and operations.

·  Ability to use OCLC and MARC records.

·  Working knowledge of classification, cataloging, acquisitions, processing, and library computer systems.

·  Working knowledge of basic office procedures; and skill in operation of listed tools and equipment.  

·  Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

·   Ability to work well as a part of a team and maintain effective work relationships with co-workers and the general public.

Preferred Qualifications: ·  Four-year post-secondary education degree (e.g., BA) · Bilingual capabilities.

**Tools and Equipment Used: ** Library computer software and system(s) and application software, such as Microsoft Office applications, online book wholesaler ordering systems, Microsoft Windows file system, collaborative software, and video conferencing software.

**Work Environment: ** The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.  The work environment is a public setting with many walk-in patrons. The noise level is generally quiet to moderately noisy. The employee is exposed to common germs, paper, book dust, and, occasionally, to mold.
