Under general direction from the Branch Services Manager, is responsible for reference, reader’s advisory, collection development, programming, displays, and outreach for adult patrons, as well as some reference and reader’s advisory for youth patrons and their caregivers.   

Essential Duties

  • Builds relationships with patrons to provide reference and readers’ advisory services.

  • Plans, facilitates, and evaluates effectiveness of in-person and virtual adult programs. 

  • Uses professional literature and resources to curate and maintain a responsive and balanced library collection based on community input and professional tenets.

  • Creates and maintains displays that promote and highlight library collections.

  • Assist, troubleshoot, and tutor patrons in computer equipment and devices.

  • Conducts outreach to promote the library’s collections, programs, and services.

  • Collaborates on and supports the library’s strategic plan and departmental goals.

  • Interprets and explains library policies and procedures to the public and works to diffuse customer escalations. 

  • Acts as Person-In-Charge (PIC) in the absence of the Branch Services Manager. 

  • Engages in professional development activities to stay current with trends and best practices.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Education/Experience

  • MLIS from an ALA-accredited institution

  • Minimum 2 years public library experience in a position that included reference, reader’s advisory, collection development, programming, and/or outreach responsibilities.

Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Knowledge of adult literature/media and professional collection management practices.
  • Experience with adult reference, reader’s advisory, programming, displays, and outreach.
  • Knowledge of ALA’s Library Bill of Rights and Freedom to Read statements.
  • Knowledgeable and comfortable with current technologies and digital resources.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite; familiarity with Polaris/Leap a plus.
  • Well-organized and able to effectively juggle multiple priorities. 
  • Excellent written/oral communication skills and able to work effectively with others.
  • Solid negotiation, conflict resolution, and public speaking skills.
  • Presents a professional image within the community at various events.
