Access Services Librarian

Description

The Pritzker Legal Research Center of Northwestern Pritzker School of Law invites applications for a full-time position of Access Services Librarian. Reporting to the Deputy Director, the Access Services Librarian is responsible for overseeing day-to-day access and circulation operations, including circulation desk services, stacks maintenance, ILL and resource sharing, and physical space and equipment. This is an in-person position with the possibility of one remote day per week after three months. While this position is generally Monday-Friday during standard business hours, occasional evenings or weekends may be required to ensure adequate coverage during all hours of library operation. 

Specific duties of this position include: 

• Manages, oversees, and participates in daily access services duties, including staffing the circulation desk, shelving, and maintaining items on reserve and equipment available for checkout. 
• Supervises a Circulation Services Manager and Government Document Assistant and indirectly supervises a team of circulation staff members and student workers.
• In collaboration with the Circulation Services Manager, hires and evaluates full-time departmental staff in the Access Services department as part of the Performance Excellence Review process.
• In collaboration with the Associate Director for Collection & Bibliographic Services, acts as a system administrator for Alma at the law library, including assigning and managing roles, public interfaces, and integrations with other systems, and communicating with University Library personnel regarding relevant updates and issues as needed.
• Serves as the primary point of contact with University Library on issues and updates relating to interlibrary loan and to resolve technical issues with systems such as ILLiad.
• In collaboration with the Circulation Services Manager, oversees access to the library’s physical space, including troubleshooting problems reported by users and alerting Facilities to issues arising in the physical space.
• Actively keeps journal members and editors informed about library-related procedures and policies in collaboration with the Student Services Librarian.
• Maintains and oversees shared journal folders and journal shelves.
• In collaboration with the Circulation Services Manager, responds to access services-related inquiries from the law school community, Northwestern University community, alumni, and general public in a polite and tactful manner, including monitoring emails sent to the circulation email account.
• Coordinates with the IT department about software or hardware-related issues at the circulation desk and other equipment throughout the library.
• Develops and implements policies and procedures to ensure accurate shelving and shelf reading and manages large-scale projects involving collection shifts.
• In collaboration with the Student Services Librarian, assists with orientation activities, LibraryFest, and other student-oriented events.
• In collaboration with the Deputy Director, develops, implements, and communicates policies relating to library hours, borrowing, and other access services and helps update the law library website regarding the same.
• In collaboration with the Associate Director for Collection & Bibliographic Services, serves as a primary point of contact for FDLP-related matters and ensures compliance with the Federal Depository Library Program.
• Establishes and fosters contacts with other professionals by participating in committee work and activities of Law School, University, and professional organizations.
• Engages in special projects and miscellaneous duties as assigned.

Requirements

Required qualifications:

• Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited library school or equivalent degree.
  3-5 years of supervisory experience, including hiring, training, evaluation, and discipline.
• Strong service orientation and enthusiasm for working with law faculty and students.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills as well as organizational and planning skills.
• Excellent customer service skills and ability to calmly handle difficult situations with patience and discretion.
• Exercises strong independent judgment consistent with library procedures and policies.
• Demonstrated ability to work both independently and in collaboration with others in a collegial atmosphere.
• Ability to manage and work efficiently on multiple projects at the same time.

Preferred qualifications:

• Professional experience in an academic law library.
• Demonstrated experience with Alma, Primo, ILLiad, SpringShare/LibGuides, Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office Suite including SharePoint and OneDrive, and collaborative tools like Google products and Microsoft Teams, or other comparable programs.
• Familiarity with techniques and tools such as HTML/CSS in relation to content management systems.
• Experience working in a library that participates in the Federal Depository Library Program.

The expected base pay range for this position is $70,000 - $80,000.

This base pay range is for a twelve-month appointment and is subject to negotiation.
